Whitney Houston and Dana Bash
Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born to a musical family on August 9th, 1963, in Newark New Jersey the daughter of gospel star Cissy Houston (nee Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. and cousin of singer Dionne Warwick. As a young girl, Houston started singing professionally in the church choir. Houston sang the backing vocals for Chaka Khosn's song from 1978 Im Every Woman with her mother. Her mother, Jermaine, and Lou Rawls were among those who she sang with. Also, she was a model for Seventeen Magazine in 1981. Beginning in 1981, she started working as a singer in the New York funk group Material. It was her quality vocal performance of this group that attracted the attention of record label including Arista. Whitney Houston became the top-selling debut album for an artist in 1985. The album contained several hit songs like How Will I Know You're Good to Me, Saving All My Love For you and The greatest Love of All. It allowed her to achieve seven US charts-topping singles in a row and surpasses the Beatles. The album was sold to three million people in during its initial year, and 25 million globally. The album won her first six Grammys. Its Whitney 1987 release, with Where Do Broken Hearts and I Wanna Dance With Somebody as hits, helped build upon the success she had achieved. But the 1992 film The Bodyguard sealed her spot as one of the most successful musicians ever. Though the movie was not very well received, nor did her performance, the soundtrack to her Dolly Parton version I Will Always Love You hit the top of both the singles and album charts in America for a period of time. It sold 44,000,000 copies. Their daughter Bobbi was born March of 1993, the year she got married to Bobby Brown. In 1996 her daily consumption of the drug was well-documented.
